World Patient Safety Day: September 17, 2022

This year’s theme is Medication safety: Safe medications

In May 2019, the 194 member states of the World Health Organization endorsed the establishment of World Patient Safety Day to be celebrated annually on September 17. World Patient Safety Day is one of WHO’s World Public Health Days. It was created to improve global understanding of patient safety, increase public engagement in healthcare safety, and promote global actions to improve patient safety and reduce patient harm. Risky medication practices and medication errors are the leading cause of preventable harm in healthcare worldwide. Globally, the cost associated with medication errors has been estimated at $42 billion per year.

The World Health Organization’s call to action for drug safety is well known. Check. Law.

For patients and caregivers: before giving or taking medication; KNOW your medications, MAKE SURE you have the right dose and the right time, and ASK your healthcare professional if you have any questions about your medications. As a patient and caregiver, actively engaging in medical treatment and medication helps achieve the goal of Drugs without danger.

For healthcare providers: before giving it; KNOW your meds, VERIFY you have the right patient, med, route, dose and time, ASK your patient if they understand. As a healthcare provider, following the call to action will promote high standards of medication management and thereby reduce the risk of medication errors and medication-related harms.

The Manitoba government has released a proclamation in recognition of World Patient Safety Day.
