Tuttosport: Pioli channels Mancini’s Italy in 6-0 win

AC Milan kicked off their pre-summer 2021 campaign in an ideal fashion by beating Serie C side Pro Sesto 6-0 at Milanello.

This morning’s edition of Tuttosport (via Milanlive) looked at some of the tactical cues we saw yesterday from head coach Stefano Pioli, who theoretically featured the starting XI in the expected 4-2-3-1 that has become his favorite lineup, but tactical changes obvious were noted during the course of the game.

Pioli’s side appeared to go down to a sort of 3-5-2 in possession, which we have seen Milan do several times, with Gabbia, Tomori and Romagnoli playing tighter on the defensive line. Castillejo and Theo Hernandez were the broad men called to push in possession, with Krunic, Tonali and Bennacer the three midfielders. Rafael Leao and Daniel Maldini were the first two.

The newspaper also writes that, in a way, Pioli’s system mimicked the way Roberto Mancini’s Italy played in the European Championships, starting with a 4-3-3 that turned in a 3-5-2 in possession with the retreat of Di Lorenzo as an additional center-back and Spinazzola pushing forward.

Of course, it should be noted that Pioli was also a bit of a virtue out of necessity given that he lacks a pure attacking midfielder and that he has neither Ibrahimovic nor Giroud.
