Man punches dad and pulls him out of wheelchair in fight over drugs

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – An Odessa man is behind bars after investigators say he allegedly assaulted his father in a wheelchair during an argument over prescription drugs. Santiago Enriquez, 19, was charged with two counts of assault and one count of injuring a disabled person.

According to an affidavit, on October 16, officers from the Odessa Police Department responded to a house on E 23rd Street to investigate a disturbance after an 18-year-old woman called 911 and said her brother was hitting their father. At the scene, officers met the teenager who said she saw her brother hit her father and that when she and her boyfriend tried to intervene he also assaulted them.

Investigators then encountered a 47-year-old victim in a wheelchair who said he was sitting in the kitchen eating when his son, identified as Enriquez, came in and asked for the “water pills” of his father. He said he wanted the drug, a diuretic typically used to treat swelling or high blood pressure, because he had smoked marijuana and needed to flush his system in hopes of passing a drug test. drugs requested by his probation officer.

When the victim refused to hand over his medication, Enriquez allegedly punched him repeatedly and then pulled him out of his wheelchair. Investigators said the victim had multiple injuries, including a swollen, tender bump on his head and a laceration in his stomach.

Officers located Enriquez praying at a nearby church; they said he admitted to assaulting his father, sister and boyfriend because he was angry that his father was not giving him the drugs. Enriquez was arrested and taken to the Ector County Law Enforcement Center where he remained Friday afternoon; his bond was set at $39,000 combined.
