A man in Reigate, Surrey is raising money for a charity that has helped him fight incurable drug-induced epilepsy.

Mike Dancer, 55, plans to resize Colley Hill 100 times over the course of five days next week as part of his fundraising effort for Lingfield-based Matthew’s Friends, which supports people with chronic illnesses who leave them people with no response to normal medications.

After developing seizures at the age of 34, Mr. Dancer found that normal medications could not help him control his condition.

Her life was changed by Matthew’s Friends, who promotes a ketogenic, high-fat diet that cuts out carbohydrates. He says it kept his seizure stable for 13 years.

Reflecting on his diagnosis, he added: “None of the pills would work, which was pretty scary. No one yet knows why they started, but they are just very complicated and make life rather restricted.

“That was before we also had to deal with covid restrictions.

“They [Matthew’s Friend’s] usually help families with children who have seizures and they dared to take me.

“To be honest, they are incredibly helpful across the country, helping parents who have this type of drug-unresponsive epilepsy.”

Taking place between Monday and Friday next week, Mr Dancer said that while his challenge could be wet given the weather forecast, he is determined to help a charity close to his heart.

“I dread it right now!” he joked.

“It takes a good 20 minutes to do each lap up and down. It’s going to take a good 5 or 6 hours a day permanently.

“Initially, the neurologists in London didn’t think I was going to live very long, they gave me five years to live about 13 years ago.

“I just needed a goal to focus on. I thought taking this challenge would help me do it just to focus.

“When I’m done I think I’ll be broken, then after that who knows? I will have to find something else to do,” he added.
