Angry couple ‘lack of medicine’ as Wizz Air cancels flight back from Spain to Doncaster

A Doncaster couple were left furious after Wizz Air canceled their flight home from Malaga and suggested they rebook to other airports over 100 miles away.

Retired insurance broker Stephen and his wife, Sue Ibbotson, a 70-year-old OAP pair booked their return flights long before Christmas and say they enjoyed a perfect one-way trip where they stayed in an apartment in Frigiliana, a one hour drive away. But on Friday, they received an email from the company telling them their flight 5907 had been canceled and they needed to make other arrangements.

Stephen, chairman of Doncaster Racecourse’s annual membership committee, said: “We flew on time on Sunday 15th May and couldn’t fault the outward journey. We were due back next Sunday , June 12, only to find out yesterday that our flight is canceled, so all we have to do is try to find our way home on our own.

“We are both on medication which will last until our original flight home on Sunday. Wizz Air in their cancellation email suggests we should rebook at other airports which are Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff and three London airports. All of these are within 100 miles of Doncaster.

“When booking our original flights, we also paid to join the Wizz Air Discount Club, which now seems like a waste of time and money.”

He added: “It was a bit of a shock on Friday. We did our best not to let it overshadow our holiday which had been very enjoyable but obviously it was a concern. I managed to book a flight back at Gatwick on Sunday but it’s the return from there that will be a problem.

“It will either have to be a very expensive taxi to Doncaster or a train journey. It’s too much to ask a member of my family to drive to Gatwick on a Sunday and bring us back when he has his. Hopefully that the company will honor our expenses.”

An email from Wizz Air sent to the couple who were seen by Yorkshire Live informs them that their flight has been canceled and says: “You can book another flight operated by us on the same or – if necessary – a comparable route, i.e. maximum 14 days before or maximum 30 days after the scheduled departure date of the original flight, subject to seat availability.

“This is the fastest way to choose a new flight for all passengers in your booking. You can request a refund in WIZZ credits to your WIZZ account for the total fare of the automatically canceled booking, with an additional +20 % as a bonus calculated for the airfare price only, excluding charges for other services.”

The airline industry suffered a terrible week after airlines canceled dozens of flights over the mid-term holiday, sparking fury from passengers who spent frustrating hours at airports, including this couple from Huddersfield.

The industry has lost billions of pounds throughout the pandemic and is still struggling to recover with many experienced baggage handlers and other key staff no longer available after many have left.
